ROLE OF NUCLEAR FORENSIC SIGNATURES IN SUPPORTING THE INVESTIGATION OF THE ORPHAN RADIOACTIVE SOURCE

Abstract

Nuclear forensic analysis can provide valuable clues about the origin and history of the orphan source or unknown radioactive source. It can be used as a tool in the fight against illicit trafficking in nuclear and radiological material. This review highlights the role of nuclear forensic signatures in supporting the investigation of the orphan source or unknown radioactive source. From the nuclear forensic analysis, forensic signature of radioactive source (e.g. physical, chemical, elemental and isotopic signatures) are determined and can be used to distinguish radioactive sources from one another or to find the similarity of the characteristics of the materials. The signatures are compiled in the library known as nuclear forensic library (NFL) that can simplify interpretation of findings of nuclear forensic investigation.
